Yeshua and the Jewish Scriptures

The accounts of Yeshua's life and proclamation of his Messiahship are recorded in a book of Jewish writings called the B'rit Chadasha (New Testament), a book that was written by Jews concerning the Messiah, Israel, and the world. We believe and teach that in the same way the scriptures of the Tanakh (Hebrew scriptures, Old Testament) are of heaven, so also are the scriptures of the B'rit Chadasha.

The accounts of Yeshua in the B'rit Chadasha teach us about Yeshua the Jew, Yeshua the Messiah, and Yeshua's earliest followers. Circumcised as a baby, Yeshua is recorded as celebrating Sukkot and Chanukah, an observer of the Sabbath and keeper of the Passover, a participant in Temple rituals, a sage and Rabbi. As a Jew, Yeshua believed very much in G-d and taught others to do the same. Much of Yeshua's life also became the basis for his Messianic claims made by his followers. Below are just some scriptures that point to Yeshua and support his Messiahship.

  • Yeshua was born in Beit Lechem (Bethlehem) foretold by the prophet Micah -- compare Micah 5:1 (in standard Hebrew bible, or v. 2 in other translations) and Matthew 2:5-6

  • Yeshua performed testifying miracles of healing -- compare Isaiah 53:3-4 and Matthew 8:16-17

  • Yeshua died a horrible death for the purpose of humankind's righteousness and forgiveness of sin -- compare Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53:4, 7-9, and 12, [Isaiah 59:2] with Matthew 27

  • Yeshua came as God's ultimate servant for both Israel and the world, both Jew and gentile -- compare Isaiah 49:6, 52:13-15, and Isaiah 53 with Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 8:32-33

  • Yeshua rose from the dead, a sign of the "achrit yamim," the last days -- compare Psalm 16:10 with Matthew 28 and Acts 1:3, 2:24-28.

  • Yeshua will return in great power and might to reign upon the throne of David, in Jerusalem, over the whole world -- compare Isaiah 9:6-7, Jeremiah 23:5-6, Zechariah 12:10, Daniel 7:13-14 with Matthew 24:29-31 and Revelation 11:15

These scriptures and their fulfillment in Yeshua represent just a few examples of what Messianic Judaism believes has come about and will be. Yeshua is the only proclaimed Messiah who fulfilled what was written in the Jewish scriptures, beginning with our father Abraham, and in the end, he will stand as the only Messiah for the world. Despite 2,000 years of history that has pitted Yeshua and the Jewish people in direct odds with one another, the scriptures of the B'rit Chadasha teach something different; what they teach is that Yeshua is for the Jewish people as much as he is for all people.
